2019 Spring

The Current and Future Landscape of Diversity Offices in Higher Education: How Do We Reclaim Our Voice?

April 12, 2019 - Kent State University, Kent, OH
CALL FOR PROPOSALS | DEADLINE: March 15, 2019 (5:00 pm)

The Ohio Consortium of Multicultural Centers in Higher Education (OCMCHE) invites presentation proposals for its Spring Conference.  Today many multicultural centers are charged with developing and maintaining culturally inclusive and supportive campus environments that promote and enhance the academic excellence, personal growth and leadership development of all students, especially our multicultural students. To continue our work, we are constantly in the process of updating our programming models as well as our strategies to engage students and provide them a greater sense of belonging on our campuses. As the number of multicultural students attending college increases, how do we create best practices that will not only model student success but create a culture of inclusion on our campuses?

Program proposals may include but are not limited to work in the following areas:

  • advancing multicultural student learning;

  • campus educational campaigns;

  • intersections of identities;

  • the role of social media in influencing the campus climate; diversity work at two-year institutions;

  • the role(s) of multicultural centers under a new presidential administration;

  • supporting the academic success of Black/African American male college students;

  • student activism;

  • supporting racially/ethnically underrepresented students and international students;

  • dialogue across difference;

  • intergroup dialogue;

  • responding to campus crisis;

  • religious and interfaith spaces and engagement;

  • academic freedom and hate speech;

  • multi partiality;

  • book reviews/recommendations;

  • self-care among staff and faculty of color

The theme for the conference is fueled by the mission of OCMCHE:

  • To share resources and information;

  • To promote the identity and mission of cultural/multicultural centers, and/or programs and initiatives addressing diversity throughout Ohio;

  • To create opportunities for networking and personal growth in the field; and,

  • To explore collaboration and partnership ideas that will enhance the work of our centers on Ohio college campuses.
